Fear. Uncertainty. Anxiety. Anger. I think all these words describe the emotions of today, Election Day. The whole nation is holding its breath, anxiously waiting for the outcome of who will be our next president. This presidential election has brought out many heavy debates not just between the candidates, but between the voters as well. Who do we vote for? Obama? Romney? Third Party? No one? Everyone has a definite opinion. In spite of the differences of thought, there has been a common thread in the discussions, one that binds everyone together and yet one that is not openly spoken of. That thread is fear.
Today, the future of our nation is in question. Will riots break out as some have speculated? Will we even know who the president is by the end of the day? Will we have to endure another endless re-count? Do our votes really even matter? In the midst of all these uncertainties, I am reminded of one thing God is in Control.
It is God who sets the kings over nations according to His plans. Daniel praised the God of heaven and declared: May the name of God be praised forever and ever, for wisdom and power belong to Him. He changes the times and seasons; He removes kings and establishes kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding. He reveals the deep and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, and light dwells with Him. (Daniel 2:20-22) For kingship belongs to the Lord; He rules over the nations. (Psalms 22:28) There’s the answer to the question Do our votes really count? When all is said in done, it is God who is in control of this election. He will give us the president that we need, one that will accomplish His purpose in spreading His gospel. How will either one of these candidates help spread the gospel when neither believe in Jesus? If you look back to the New Testament church the gospel was spread through persecution, not through good times. God will use either man to His glory and to our benefit.
Another comforting thought is that our God is still on His throne! We are not electing a new god today only a mere human. Even the presidents and kings will bow before Jesus Christ someday! They may appear powerful, but in reality they are not. They are caught up in the spiritual forces of good and evil just like the rest of us which is why we need to pray for them.
People are placing their hope in a President to save America. That hope is terribly misplaced. America will get back on track only through the spreading of the gospel. Believers, no matter what your political view is, let’s not lose focus. Do not become so entangled in fear and anger over something that really is not within our control, but let’s look to Jesus, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords who will perform His will today for our good! Walk confidently so that those who do not know Jesus can see the peace of God in our lives and in our conversations.
Psalm 102:15 – “Then the nations will fear the name of Yahweh,
and all the kings of the earth Your glory, ”
Psalm 99:1-9 – 1 “The Lord reigns! Let the peoples tremble.
He is enthroned above the cherubim. Let the earth quake. Yahweh is great in Zion; He is exalted above all the peoples.”
It is good to be reminded that God is in control especially at this time.
Love, Mom
